Purpose & Vision

Urban NdN Reads is dedicated to bringing together community, cultural knowledge, and cultural reclamation to empower Urban Indigenous People. We acknowledge the profound impact of intergenerational trauma, violence, and abuse, and we invest in pathways that honor our original kinship networks, reclaim our lost and stolen teachings, and empower relatives across the Indigenous identity. Through the stories of Indigenous authors, poets, and storytellers, we are committed to cultural empowerment and identity affirmation, empowering community members to reclaim and celebrate their heritage.

Goals

  1. Promotion of literacy and education
  2. Community building and connection
  3. Cultural empowerment and identity affirmation
  4. Promotion of healing and wellness
  5. Cultural awareness and sensitivity
  6. Historical understanding and reconciliation

Joining UIC's Monthly Book Club

At Urban NdN Reads, we promote literacy and education within our indigenous community through the celebration and exploration of indigenous literature. By centering indigenous authors and storytellers, we enhance literacy skills and cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of our diverse cultures and histories. Our book club serves as a hub for community building and connection, providing a welcoming space for indigenous individuals to come together, share experiences, and forge meaningful relationships.

Fostering Community

We aim to create a sanctuary for Urban Indigenous People to come together, share experiences, network, and forge meaningful relationships, nurturing healing and wellness within the community. Acknowledging the lateral and systemic violence caused by colonialism, we support the healing journey of our members while holding space for truth-telling, honoring our ancestors, and fostering community bonds through the transformative power of healing circles rooted in storytelling, dialogue, and introspection.
