UIC intends to reduce the impact of mental health and substance use disorders through providing prevention services, early intervention, treatment, counseling, and recovery support. UIC recognizes the unique experience of historical and intergenerational trauma of Urban Natives. Therefore, we will introduce culturally-relevant services which is an essential component of the UIC mission.
UIC defines Talking Circles as a group therapeutic process founded in sharing, teaching, listening, and learning which supports the path to healing within a community.
UIC intends to provide Talking Circles as an integrated approach to support Urban Natives in the many areas of early intervention, treatment, counseling, and recovery. Talking circles provide a supportive, inclusive, and safe space where individuals may share openly and in confidence with other Urban Natives about their Indigenous urban experience and the challenges they may be facing.
